                                      WEEK IN REVIEW

                                              02/10/2010

This week's meeting was held at York County Community College in Wells.   Pres. Steve called us to order; Hydie led us in song; and Randy had us join him in the Four-Way test.  All who were absent missed Dad Kany's new and inspiring invocation.

Chef Larry introduced the students of the culinary school who had prepared our lunch.  And what a lunch it was!  We were treated to a smorgasbord of epicurean delights.  Thanks Chef Larry and students!

PE Julie introduced Visiting Rotarians Tom Simpson of the York Club and Alex Fabish.  Our guest was Casey Chasse son of SAA Karen.

Please check the District website at www.rotary7780.org for upcoming events.  Details of the District Assembly on April 10 at YCCC and the District Conference on May 14-16 at the Portsmouth Sheraton can be found there.  Along with the most recent newsletter and lots of other info.  PE Julie will be attending PETS (President Elect Training Sessions) in March.

When she gets back, Julie will be ready to start planning her upcoming year as President.  If you have an interest in certain committees, please let her know.  Otherwise, you will be assigned where needed.

Earl "hammer" Goodwin said he'd called 25 folks to see if they had "nailed" down any items for the Auction.  We need these ASAP.  February 17th to be exact!  So far the Club has 72 items while Saco Bay has a slight lead with 86.  Come on everybody, we can't let them beat us.

The fruit is expected by Friday.   Watch your email for pickup location, etc.  Chuck gave us an update on our upcoming 90th Anniversary festivities.  We need an estimate of how many will be attending the various events.  Please reply to the email or see Chuck for a paper attendance form.  Thanks Chuck!

The 50/50 of $25 was won by Randy who coincidentally sold the tickets.  Oh really???!!!  We were spared the wrath of the Sergeant at Arms.  Look out cause next week she'll have to make up for lost revenues.

A. Wm. Kany introduced John Rainone, Dean of Institutional Advancement and Executive Director of the YCCC Foundation.  John is also very involved in Rotary and serves as assistant to the District.  John then introduced Dr. Charles Lyons, President of YCCC.  Charlie is the college's 4th President and came on board in August 2006.  Dr. Lyons has a long history in the Maine college system.  He is married to Barbara and they live in Scarborough with their 14 and 18 year old daughters.  They also have 3 grown children.  Dr. Lyons thanked us for being there and acknowledged the "father of YCCC" our very own A. Wm. Kany!  YCCC started 15 years ago and has been in its current building for the past 12.  YCCC is the only public college in York County.  Enrollment continues to grow from 756 students in 2006 to 1400 in 2010 - a 44% growth! Credit hours for this same time period went from 6,059 to 11,622.  The school is well managed and in spite of State budget problems , YCCC has managed to operate without layoffs or furlough days.  Unlike other Maine colleges,  YCCC has a mortgage and the school needs to be aggressive to meet this obligation.  The YCCC Foundation has helped raise $2 million in the few years.  But more is needed.  Dr. Lyons is constantly meeting with members of the business community and said he has 43 upcoming breakfasts or lunches from now to April.  YCCC provides an affordable, educational opportunity in York County.   For $2,500 a year, a student can obtain a quality education.  For more information, check them out online at www.yccc.edu.  Thanks Bill and Charlie for a great program.  Pres. Steve presented Dr. Lyons with a donation of $500.

This week we are back at the Captain's Galley.  Our program will be Major General John Libby, Adjutant General, of the Maine National Guard since 2004.  This should be an informative program about the status of the Guard.  Don't miss it!

Respectfully submitted,

Helene, Ye Editor
