                                                            WEEK IN REVIEW

                                                               April 14, 2010

Pres. Steve called the meeting to order and after we sang a Patriotic song, recited the Four-Way Test and joined in prayer we enjoyed a delicious buffet.  There were no Visiting Rotarians for PE Julie to introduce.  However we were joined by our special guests the winners of the Essay contest and their families.  More on this later.

Announcements included a reminder for the upcoming District Assembly on April 24th at YCCC.  B-I-N-G-O Joe was promoting the 2nd Annual  Bingo for PolioPlus Fundraiser on Saturday, May 8th.  This event will be held at the Rochambeau Club in Biddeford from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.   Tickets are $15 each

and all members are asked to buy/sell 4!  Sponsorships are $100!  See Joe or Julie for more details.  Don't forget the District Conference which is right around the corner.  The conference is being held in Portsmouth and should be a great time.  Check out the District website for more info.

1st Posting - Steve Saucier.  Please direct any comments to Secretary Dawn.

Whoever had the 1st winning ticket for the 50/50 was nowhere to be found so a 2nd ticket was pulled.  This time PP Frank G was quick to claim the winnings.

PE Julie chaired this week's Program - the Essay Contest.  Julie gave a brief history on how the Essay Contest was started.  This is the 15th year that 8th grade students from area schools participate by writing an essay on "What Family Means to Me."  The faculty judges the essays and determines three top winners who are awarded prizes of $100, $50 and $25 respectively.

In her essay, Michelle Laverriere of St. James School said although you can't choose your family these people are what make a house a home.  Michelle added that family is "always there" and the best "recipe for family" is unconditional love.

Kayley Allen of Loranger Middle School said "family is like fudge- sweet and with nuts."  There is no ideal family and everybody gives what they can. A special time for Kayley is the annual family reunion in Parsonfield.

Valerie Pendleton winner from Saco Middle School had a special meaning for each letter in the word family.  Friendship, annoying, mother, indestructible, laughter and YOU!

Amber Mondor of Biddeford Middle School used words like bond, connected, trust, support, advice, role model to describe what family meant to her.

she added that family members do not have to blood relatives to be family.

It was obvious that even if each student had a different definition of "family"  they all agreed on one thing.  Family is very important and should be appreciated.

Joining the winners were family members and school faculty.  2nd and 3rd place winners were:

Biddeford Middle School      2nd - Monica Gatchalian;  3rd - Amanda LaFlamme

Loranger Middle School       2nd - Amanda Palkovis;    3rd - Mahrina Lionetta

Saco Middle School             2nd - Lena Hildebrand;     3rd - Travis Williford

St. James School                 2nd - Mira Mckenney;        3rd- Mayson Picard

Congratulation to all!!   And a BIG THANK YOU to the Essay Committee members for all their hard work and efforts.

Sorry I'll miss you all tomorrow.

Helene, Ye Editor
