WEEK IN REVIEW
04/28/2010
President Steve, back from his vacation, opened the meeting. Frank D before leading us in song asked for forgiveness I assume for his voice. While I was glad to forgive him Sgt of Arms Karen, unfortunately for Frank was not forgiving. Dana, hesitantly gave the 4-way test and was fined by our Sgt of Arms for not saying it like you know it. Matt giving the invocation must have been "shaking in his boots" but came through with enough, vim and vinegar, to avoid a fine.
Our lunch, requested by Jim A, was fried shrimp, fried chicken, fries and onion rings. I thought it was good but if anyone had any complaints complain to Jim.
We had a number of visitors from other clubs but our most interesting was a 5 person GSE team from India led by Rotarian Shishir Hiray, a lawyer from the town of Malegaon in the State of Maharashtra. They introduced themselves and they were very accomplished individuals.
Phil Denison gave his Rotary minute and it happened to be about India and that Rotary is doing good works by bringing clean well water to people who do not have it.
Joe Moreshead reminded everyone of BINGO this Saturday, 5/8 10:00AM to 1:00PM. the doors open at 8:00AM.
The winner of the 50/50 was Dave Moravick from the Kennebunk club.
Happy Dollars started with a large donation from Ken F to thank those in the club who took over his duties while he had other commitments. Joe M for his son winning a race and a shed donated to a community garden. President Steve gave a donation, as thanks, to be safely back in Maine after driving from Fl with 4 teenagers. Frank G told about his son's travels to dangerous areas of the world. Bill the lawyer, thanked those who bought lottery tickets to benefit Thornton Academy. Jim A went to Idaho to visit his wife Margo's friend and hosted Shisir Hiray at his home. Jim A must have won the lottery as he said he had a lot of $1's to spend. There were a lot of club members who were willing to spend a $1 if he would sit down. Roland Gagne had a hankering for chai for a long time. He hosted one of the India team and had his thirst sated with 3 cups of chai. The club sang happy birthday to Julie as her birthday fell on the meeting day.
Sgt of Arms Karen fined Jim for bringing religion into last week's meeting. Dana gave a large donation being thankful tax season was over and also for his rendition of the 4 way test mentioned above. Karen also thought Joe M had drunk a special Kool-Aid at the last meeting and he had to pay for that, although he probably does not remember anything. I am beginning to think, being absent at the last meeting, I missed a lot of goings on.
The speaker for Jr Achievement was Jennifer Sirois. This non-profit organizations purpose is to prepare young people to succeed in a global economy. This is done through various programs as for example: personal economics, entrepreneurship and personal opportunities and responsibilities. These are 3 programs among 20 that are given to grades K-12. There are many teachers that have requested these programs but there are not enough volunteers to teach all subjects requested. 40 out of 60 classes were able to be given and this by some volunteers doing double and triple duty. The schools served in northern York county are in Arundel, Biddeford, OOB and Saco. No state or federal funds are solicited and no funds are derived from the United Way. To volunteer contact Holly Deery (207)347-4333 or e-mail: program@jamaine.org. JA provides all the materials, training and support for volunteers.
Thanks Bruce for the great accounting of our last meeting. It was so real, I almost felt I was there!
We are in need of reporters so if you would like to try your hand at this, please let me know.
See you all tomorrow.
