                                                       WEEK IN REVIEW

                                             06/09/2010

The beginning of this meeting is all a blur.  By the time I noticed  there wasn't a TACK reporter, we were already into the announcements.  I'm pretty sure President Steve started the meeting on time (as he usually does) and went on to lead the group in the Pledge of Allegiance.  Jim Godbout did a great job with the 4 Way Test as did Jim Audiffred with the invocation.  We all joined in together to sing a patriotic song before heading over to the buffet line.

President-Elect Julie Villemaire was called upon to introduce visiting Rotarians and guests.   We were delighted to see Ned Perkins again who was visiting from Santa Maria, Florida. Ned visited our group quite often last summer.  Also "visiting" -but not for long- was Joe Bassett from the Portland Club.  Joe is in the process of transferring his membership over to the Biddeford-Saco Club!  Welcome Gentlemen!

Director Phil Denison provided the weekly Rotary Minute.

ANNOUNCEMENTS:

Auction:  Frank Dumais presented the club with a check for $20,000.00 which represents the proceeds from the annual TV auction!  Awesome job Frank!! Just in time for budget talks :)

At a previous meeting, Hydie Knuckles had mentioned that she told her cousin, who is on his third tour in Iraq, about our "Flags for our Veterans" project.  He sent a very touching and heartfelt  letter to Hydie.  I completely understand why she had a fellow Rotarian read the letter aloud ~I was so touched by the letter that I had stopped taking notes....not a good thing to do when you are the TACK reporter!  Hydie's cousin also sent an American flag to her that was flown over their compound in Iraq.

First Posting:  President Steve announced the first posting for Tom LaChance.  Tom was instrumental in the revitalization project of the Old Orchard Beach Ball Park.  If you have any comments please place them in writing and forward to the secretary, Dawn DeSimone.

Changeover Dinner:  The changeover dinner is being held on Saturday, June 26, 2010, at the Marriott at Sable Oaks in South Portland.  Cocktail hour begins at 5:30 p.m.  All Rotarians, guests and families are welcome to attend!  The club will pick up the tab!  Registration is due by June 16, 2010, so please let President Steve or Julie know as soon as possible if you are able to attend.

Vernita Pastorelli:  President Steve announced that past president Jim Pastorelli's wife, Vernita, passed away last week.  He recently gave a happy dollar for being married for 61 years.  Please keep Jim and his family in your thoughts and prayers.

Committee Assignments ~  Committee assignments were handed out at last week's meeting.  President-Elect Julie also sent an e-mail club wide with an electronic version and Brian Dallaire was posting the list on the club website.  Please make sure you review the listing for any errors/omissions as soon as possible.

If you notified Julie of your preferences there is a good chance you were placed on that committee.  There were also some committees that were a little "light" so I plugged in some people that I thought would do a great job.  If you didn't get back to Julie and are truly passionate about a particular committee please don't hesitate to call her!!

** TACK Sponsorships ~ It is time to start thinking about getting some advertising for your business by sponsoring the TACK!  We will continue to have both an electronic version and hard copy.  Where else can you advertise in 4 locations (on a weekly hard copy bulletin, weekly e-mail and also the club website which will be linked to the district website)  for only $100.00 for one  full year?  It's a steal!  Contact Helene Plourde or Julie Villemaire to reserve your space!

CALLING ALL REPORTERS!   Helene Plourde has graciously agreed to continue on as YE Editor of the TACK.  She does a superb job but she can't do it alone.  There is a sign-up sheet circulating throughout the room for reporter duty.  We will have a notebook and pen at the front desk so you won't even have to worry about bringing paper.  Your help will greatly be appreciated!  The TACK is a wonderful communication tool especially for those Rotarians who aren't able to make the meeting for health or other reasons.

Greeters/Registration (set up & take down):   There is also a sign-up sheet circulating for the front desk/fellowship duty.  Please arrive by 11:45 so everything will be ready before the first members arrive.

50/50 RAFFLE:   The winner of the $35.00 went to none other than Earl "Lucky" Goodwin.

HAPPY $'s / FINES:    SAA Karen had achieved her budget results but is going for the "gravy"!  Happy Dollars were received from the following Rotarians:  Frank Dumais -auction is FINALLY over and also celebrated his 39th wedding anniversary; Earl Goodwin and the Rotary golf team won first place at the Chamber golf tournament.  Rumor has it that he also won that 50/50 raffle at the tournament.  He's happy his luck continued with the club's 50/50 raffle today.  President Steve's daughter was elected as president of Interact and he only has 3 meetings left to go; Phil Denison gave $50 happy dollars for the Rotary Foundation for 50 years of wedded bliss -Congratulations Phil! Brian Dallaire gave $2 happy dollars for TA's graduation at 1:00 p.m. on Sunday and $2.00 for BHS's graduation at 3:00 p.m on the same Sunday; Julie gave $2 happy dollars for the dedication of the St. James 8th grade yearbook to her husband Dan and $3.00 because there are only 3 weeks left before it's time to get the show on the road!  SAA Karen rode "superman"on Saturday and she is just getting her voice back.  Her daughter Julia swinging the sledge hammer to ring the bell ~ not only once but twice and only hitting her toe once!  Julia still went to school on Monday while Mom played hooky from work.  Fines were also plentiful.  Will the real Frank please stand....it was one of the "Franks" birthdays recently but I never did find out who's it was.  Ken Farley got nailed because SAA Karen had written a check on 04/09 and it just recently cleared her account.  Dave Lowe was fined for refusing to do the 4 Way Test last week when first approached.  I couldn't hear the comments but it looked like President Steve was paying the fine! Steve was also fined for all of the surprise extra guests last week.  Apparently it was a known fact that Interact students would be joining us but the exact number was a pleasant surprise!    Dave Lowe, the program co-chair, didn't know either.  Poor Kim Girard was getting blamed and he wasn't here at the meeting to defend himself.  SAA Karen told Dave to get his dollar back from Jackson ~our Interact liaison .  Joe Moreshead was fined for complaining that his table was always the last to go eat ~ "as usual".  SAA Karen had a hard time understanding that concept because after the opening portion of the meeting, the president invites everyone at once to help themselves to the buffet.  Jim Audiffred was fined for wearing Carl Goodwin's name tag.  SAA Karen said Carl may not have wanted Jim as a brother.  I believe Jim also put up some more money in praise of Phil Denison following his lead and donating $1.00 for every year of his marriage (happy or otherwise).  Bernice and Leon were last in and Scooters were charged $2.00.

SPEAKER:

Our speaker for today was Laurie DuPaul, Executive Director for the Child Abuse Prevention Council of York County.  This is a non-profit organization committed to the prevention of all forms of child abuse and neglect.  Central to the mission is the promotion of healthy, nurturing relationships between children and adults.  Through education, collaboration and advocacy the Council provides programs and events which foster the well-being of children and families throughout York County.  The CAPC has 5 employees:  The Executive Director, Prevention Educator, Community Outreach Coordinator, the Administrative Assistant who works with volunteers and assists all staff and the Fatherhood Educator.  In August they will be celebrating 30 years ~ 30 years of better communication and 30 years of  helping families.  There are 4 forms of abuse: Neglect, Emotional, Physical and Sexual.  It is very important to speak with children about "Body Safety" and use the proper terminology.  This actually could help prevent abuse.  There are several programs that the CAPC offers.  There are programs for the schools, for professionals who work with youth and also for family support and PTO groups.   For more information on these programs please contact: Child Abuse Prevention Council of York County ~985-5975/ e-mail: info@kidsfreetogrow.org  or website www.kidsfreetogrow.org

Respectfully submitted by PE Julie Villemaire

Thanks PE Julie for taking the notes.

See you all tomorrow.

Helene, Ye Editor
