                                                                                          WEEK IN REVIEW

                                                                                           January 13, 2010

Pres. Steve called the meeting to order and after a Patriotic song led by yours truly, Keith G was asked to lead the Four Way Test.  Scott S asked that we join him in a moment of silence.   We then all enjoyed a bountiful buffet.

PE Julie introduced guests Andrea Moreshead and Stephanie Desjardins.  There were no Visiting Rotarians.  Phil shared this week's Foundation Fact.

This week’s Rotary Foundation Thought is about Matching Grants.

Rotary Clubs in Wisconsin, USA created the Power Flour Action Network to make an impact on the lives of infants and severely malnourished children and adults. Power Flour has targeted malnourished populations in 65 countries to date, providing a very small amount of barley malt flour to cooked starchy staples, such as rice, wheat or maize. The supplement helps digest the starch, converting it into sugars the body can absorb quickly and easily. The sugars power the body so that it can grow and function. A Matching Grant from The Rotary Foundation has enabled Rotarians in Wisconsin to bring Power Flour to children in orphanages and feeding programs in Panama. Rotarians in the Rotary del Norte club in Panama will carry out the distribution and training in Panama to reach up to 10,000 children in the first year. Members of the Sturgeon Bay, WI, USA club are now working to develop a commercial model for PowerFlour so that it will become self-sustaining. Every Rotarian, Every Year – Nourishing bodies and minds.   Thanks Phil.

While you're paying your dues, why not add some extra money for the Foundation!  Remember the Club will match your donation.

Jake reminded us that January 27th is the last day to place your fruit orders.  All he needs is the number of cases - money can follow!

Frank Du needs our items for the Auction by February 19th.  If you need more Inventory Control sheets, please see Frank.  PP Earl received the Club's 1st "Eager Beaver" Award as he already turned in his items.  That a boy, Earl!  Rollie is responsible for the Quickie and BIG Board sales.  $2,500 will buy you, or someone you know, the major sponsorship.   There's not much time so let's get going!

Roland gave us an update on the computer school in Kenya.   Due to an outbreak of cholera, the school has been shut down.  Hopefully, Roland will be able to give his program sometime in March.   Follow the GSE team on the web.  Alex, who our Club sponsored, is keeping us posted on the GSE teams adventures in India.  Check it out!

Secretary Dawn reported attendance at 70.9%!  Great job everyone.  A sign up sheet for registration duty was circulated.  If you can help, please let Dawn know.

There was an overwhelming response to Pres. Steve's request for volunteers to serve on the Company B Charitable Committee.   As a result, it was decided to place everyone's name in a hat, ok, an envelope, and choose 6 members.   The following will make up the committee chaired by PP Dave:  "dad" Kany, PP Don, PE Julie, PP Mark, Andy and George.   Congratulations to all!

The 50/50 was won by Alan who very generously donated his $37 in winnings to the Scholarship Fund.  Thanks Alan!   Next came Sergeant at Arms Karen.  It was all about the kids...Happy $$ were offered by Jake whose daughter uttered her 1st words "da-da"; PP Paul's whose son Adam is no longer at "555" but now sous-chef at Legal Seafoods - Long Wharf, Boston!; Scott's son has new duty station in Hawaii!; Mark hiked Mt. Lafayette with sons.  PE Julie bargain hunting for next year's children's Christmas party received an unexpected donation of 100 rolls of wrapping paper from Marden's; SAA Karen's step-son turned 20 but she got the gifts of thank you and love you! Fines were levied against Keith G, Joe, Dave, Peggy, Pres Steve and the late Dana.

Our Program this week was none other than our very own Brian Dallaire.  Dr. Dallaire is currently President of Lighthouse Clinical Development since founding the company in 2001.  Lighthouse is a consulting firm which specializes in helping the Pharmaceutical/ Biotechnology industry plan strategies for clinical pharmaceutical development.  Previously Brian was Senior Director at IDEC Pharmaceuticals in San Diego.  Dr. Dallaire trained as a clinical pharmacist with a focus on oncology at the University of Cincinnati, where he received his Doctor of Pharmacy.  He received a B.S. degree in Pharmacy from the University of R.I.  Brian has been a Rotarian since 2000 when he joined the LaJolla Golden Triangle Rotary Club.  Upon moving to ME, he joined the Biddeford-Saco Rotary Club.  Dr. Dallaire serves on the Boards of UNE and TA and volunteers as a pharmacist at the Biddeford Free Clinic.

Brian is our webmaster and gave us an overview of the inner workings of the site.  Unfortunately, technical difficulties did not allow him to show us how it works.  Picture it....  you can use the links on the left side to navigate.  Each member should keep his/her profile page updated.  Remember if you change your email address, please notify Ye Editor as well.  All members are able to view each other's info but can only edit their own.   PP Frank expressed his thanks to Brian for all the work he has done with our website.  All agreed!  The website is a great resource and has many links to other valuable info.  Check out the Calendar of Events to stay up to date to Club happenings.   It's worth taking a few minutes to review our website.  Questions, problems?  Give Brian a call or send him an email.

Thanks Brian!

Hope to see you all tomorrow.

Helene, Ye Editor
